I like to recreate Korean cityscape, as a person who does not belongs anywhere neither US nor Korea because of going back and forth without settling in. And also as a woman it’s hard to fit into male dominated Korean culture kills more individuality. As a result of a hierarchy male society moves everyone strictly like clockwork that only runs for upper class. So, my drawings illustrate Korean Capitalism by replacing heads with fish heads that resemble schooling fish moving across the sea together as a group that doesn’t have sense of individuality.

About the Piece

In performance, my body has a context as an Asian female. It is not a blank canvas–my racial and gender identities are already depicted. Therefore, I embrace and utilize my own body to describe my state of being. In my most recent performance, I establish intimate relationship between Asian females and the way we are sexualized.

EATEN BY SILENCE

My creative practice navigates the Asian female Identity through the lens of a Korean Immigrant woman. In mediums such as drawings and performance, I embody myself as an outsider and observer. I find myself in the middle. This displacement allows me to criticize both Korean and American cultures, while developing the survival skills to be neutral and submit what I believe seems right and wrong. In a way I’m in limbo.

Through my drawing practice, I portray my own struggle with body issues as a woman; rejection and resentment of my own body. I depict distorted female bodies, mini drawings with sarcastic texts and title. My drawings depict my own experience as a woman dealing with ideal body image and the struggle to fit myself in it. Characters in my drawings burst out of anger, they that rip off breast and distort their body at the end because they cannot meet the body expectations. The small drawings with text also show my own experience and pain from past relationships.
